When two bodies are fished out of the Columbia River, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s department invites Samantha Harris’s insights into the investigation as a former special agent. But things heat up for Sam, her colleagues, and her new fuzzy sidekick, Doof, when they bite off more than they can chew. What began as a cut-and-dried murder investigation quickly becomes a battle for national security with a link between the murder victims and the Fraternity, a group of social-military elites led by the ruthless Roland Bauer. Backed by a team of lethally trained mercenaries, Bauer threatens Sam to drop all interest in the murders. Sam goes off the rails to protect her loved ones, leaving a trail of bullets and bodies behind her. But will she be the one to win this battle of will and might? When you mess with Sam, there’s only one thing she can guarantee you: death by hostility.” – blurb from ‘Death by Hostility’.

A strong plot, well-developed characters, and good writng are important factors for attracting readers, however, your book’s blurb - that succinct, tantalizing description on the back cover, serves as the initial invitation to readers. The blurb is a critical element in attracting potential readers and enticing them to delve into your literary world. But writing a well-crafted blurb that encapsulates the essence of your story without giving away all its secrets can be tricky. Whether you’re a seasoned author, or just starting out, let’s go over some tips and strategies for crafting the perfect blurb that’s sure to get attention.

First, it’s important to know the audience whom you’re targeting. Take some time and pin down whose attention you’re trying to entice. Different genres and age groups have different preferences and expectations when it comes to storytelling. Understanding who your perspective readers are helps you tailor your blurb to their specific interests and needs. This is the first step in grabbing the right reader’s attention, and increase the chances of them purchasing your book.

Also, it’s important that your blurb matches the genre and tone of your book. For example, if you’re writing a romance novel, your book’s blurb should focus on the romantic elements of the story, and highlight your character’s emotional journey. Likewise, if you’re penning a fantasy novel, your book’s blurb should focus on the fantastical elements of the story, and highlight the excitement and dangers your characters face. Thriller blurbs will require emphasis on tension, stakes, and mystery to entice potential readers.

Keeping your blurb short and succinct is best. The optimal word count for a blurb typically falls in the range of 100 to 150 words. This word count allows you to provide enough information to capture the reader’s interest while keeping it concise and engaging. Remember, the primary goal of your blurb is to lure potential readers and leave them curious about your story, without giving away too much. Your well-structured blurb should introduce your main characters, outline the central conflict, and offer a glimpse of the setting. This trio swiftly captures readers’ attention and entices them to journey deeper into your story. A compelling blurb leaves a lasting impression, one that frequent results in a book sale.

Try to end your blurb with a hook, a provocative statement about the theme of your book, or a teaser about the unexpected twists and turns that lie ahead. Leave them wanting more! This will encourage readers to buy your book. Remember, the goal of your blurb is to entice readers and make them want to pick up your book out of all the other options out there in your same genre. From personal experience, if a blurb fails to seize my attention and have me reading its first pages right there in the bookstore aisle, it’s very unlikely to leave the store with me.

Before finalizing your blurb, be sure to proofread it carefully for any errors in grammar, punctuation, or spelling. Even a single mistake can detract from the overall quality of your writing, which can leave a negative impression on potential readers. Identify areas of your blurb that need improvement by trying out different versions, and getting feedback from beta readers, friends, or family members.

Writing a compelling book blurb is a crucial part of the book publishing and marketing process. It’s the first thing that potential readers see, so it’s important to make every word count. By following these tips and examples, you can create a blurb that will capture readers’ attention and entice them to buy your book. Remember to keep it short and sweet, focus on the benefits of your book, and highlight what sets it apart from others in the same genre. With a well-written blurb, you can increase the chances of your book becoming a bestseller.
